How to use a camp funnel standing up

Practical steps for seating a silicone funnel, testing it at home in the shower, and packing it into a pocket on the trail.

Try it at home first

The easiest place to figure out how our silicone funnel fits is your home shower. Strip down and run the water. Hold the wide rim firmly against your body, angling the spout downward. Let go without forcing a heavy stream. You will feel how the flexible silicone forms a seal against you. Doing this a couple of times before you head out takes the guesswork away. You learn the angle that prevents backflow before you have heavy boots and three layers of trail clothes on.

Standing beats crouching on slopes

Crouching on an incline invites slips, especially on wet leaves or loose shale. You drop your center of balance into loose dirt and risk splashing your socks. Standing up keeps your boots planted on solid ground. Face downhill or crosswise to the grade. You can keep your pack on your back, which saves you from setting gear down in mud. The silicone funnel gives you direction and clearance, directing the flow away from your boots without forcing awkward squats near trail edges.

Seating the rim properly

Unzip your layers enough to slide the wide top into place. You want the flared silicone rim held flush from front to back. Press it upward with light, steady pressure using one hand. Do not pinch the sides of the funnel together, because squeezing collapses the internal channel and causes spills. Keep your stance wide and steady. Aim the spout down and forward into the brush or into a collapsible bucket if you are inside a privacy tent. Let the flow run naturally without rushing it.

Rinsing with plain water

A quick splash of plain water clears the channel immediately after use. Carry a bottle in your other hand to rinse the inside and outside of the funnel before you pack it away. The smooth silicone surface sheds droplets quickly, so a firm shake removes most of the moisture. If you are using a liner or a gelling compound inside a camp setup, direct the rinse into the bag. Out on the trail, pack out any waste according to the posted rules of the area you walk.

Rolling it into a pocket

Once rinsed and shaken off, the flexible spout bends back over the wide rim. Roll the silicone down into a small bundle. It slips into a dedicated mesh bag or directly into a jacket pocket with a zipper. Because the material is pliable, it does not crack or hold a bend when you fold it up. It springs right back into its proper flared shape the moment you pull it out for the next stop. Keep it near the top of your pack.

Keep the funnel in an outside pocket where you can reach it without unbuckling your pack. If you set up a privacy tent at base camp, leave the funnel hanging from an internal hook next to your foldable gear. Practice makes the whole routine second nature.
